What is Alpha-Phenylacetoacetonitrile(APAAN)?
APAAN (also: APAAN) or Alpha-Phenylacetoacetonitrile is an organic compound that is used in the preparation of certain drugs.
APAAN contains a nitrile group and a benzene ring (phenyl group).
The substance is used, as a drug pre-precursor, to make the substance phenylacetone (also known as BMK BenzylMethylKetone), from which the stimulants methamphetamine and amphetamine are made.

The US Department of State specifically mentions the Netherlands as a place where APAAN is used. The European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) mentions Poland in particular.
APAAN is not mentioned in the Dutch Opium Act and the Chemical Abuse Prevention Act, but it is mentioned in the Dutch Customs brochure for Drug Precursors. On 19 December 2012, the Court in Den Bosch ruled in a criminal case that possession and production of this substance are not punishable in itself.
It is noteworthy, however, that on August 27, 2013, this same court ruled that its possession is punishable. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service believes, because it would only be used for the production of the drug precursor BMK, that APAAN does fall under the Chemical Abuse Prevention Act.
